As yon knights rode gaily
Into the forest green
They spied a fair young lady
Standing for to be seen

"Good sirs why do you ride here
Amongst the boughs and rocks
When three half-leagues yonder
Fell men steal my flocks?"

The knights then they turned hither
From the tree-filled land
And rode three half-leagues wither
The maid pointed her hand

And the knights rode into battle
With bloodlust in their hearts
And they came upon a farm
Where armed men were herding flocks

The knights rode into battle
And fell upon the men
And spilled blood their blood upon the earth
And slew the thieves in wrath

And thus the men did perish
Till one said on that farm
"I am the King's own Sherriff
Why do you do me harm?"

"I came to gather taxes
For your one true King
And now you slay with axes
The men who serve your King"

And so the knights in terror
Fled to their own keep
And the maid who caused such error
She got to keep her sheep
